Letting Go

So you have gone from having a baby, a kid and now a teen.  Now it is time for you as a parent let go so that your teen can come into there own.  Its time to teach them how to survive in the real world.  If you start now teaching your teen how to take care of themselves they will do much better when it is time to move out and move on.

By now your teen should be doing there own laundry

Holding a part-time job-  I know there are people who dont want there kids to work but just think of all the benefits of what working will teach a teen.  It will teach them accountability, responsibility and money management (something most adults haven't tackled)

Make your teen help buy there own school clothes.  So your teen wants clothes from American Eagle, Hollister, Guess, Abercombie & Fitch or another expensive brand.  Make them buy them.  Offer to buy the basics and tell your teen that if they want something more expensive then they will have to work and buy it themselves.  Doing this will teach your teen the value of a dollar and appreciation for there belongings.

Preparing for College

If you have a teen then it is time to start to thinking about college and how they are going to get there.  If you haven't started saving its not to late.  Just buckle down and make a budget and start saving now.  Something is better than nothing.

First thing first don't push your dreams on your teen because in the end you will push them further away and if they do follow your dreams you are just preparing to let yet another unhappy unfulfilled adult into the world.  Talk to them about what it is they would like to do and what schools they are considering.

Sit down with them and make a plan to get them to their goals.  You have to be their biggest cheerleader. The sooner you start talking about this the better because then you will have a much better outlook and feel far less rushed  when the day gets closer.

Its never to early to start taking ACT/SAT prep classes to prepare your teen for these college entrance exams.  The more practive they get the more comfortable they will be when it is time to take the test and better test scores mean better schools and better chances and getting a scholarship of some sort.

Volunteer. As I talked about in the article above get your teen involved the better your teens resume the more they stand out to an admissions board. Keep in mind that there are thousands upon thousands of admissions packets flowing in so your teen is going to have to have that edge.

Here is a complete online guide to preparing your teen for college.

Get them involved

There so many ways that teens can make a difference and get some really good causes added to there college application.

Find out what interests your teen and then together find programs that build on that intrest.

Is your teen drawn to helping children-  Get them involved in tutoring younger kids or volunteering in a children's hospital.

Does your teen love animals- Find a local vet and ask if your teen can volunteer to walk the animals or feed them,  there are also great programs for teens to train dogs for the blind and deaf.

Maybe your teen love sports- There are plenty of pee wee teams that would love to have a volunteer to help teach the kids the basics of the sport.

There are so many ways to get your teen involved in the community and keep them busy so they can stay out of trouble.

If a teen is viewed as a role model they will be less likely to get into trouble because they won't want to let down the people who look up to them.

Celebs should didn't be your teens role models, you should be.  Let your teen know they can be the role model of someone younger than them.
